U2 songs worthy of a second listen

First Published on All U2 Songs Lyrics.

U2 is a band well known for its big singles. Songs like Where the Streets Have No Name, Beautiful Day and Desire all popular the world over. Some U2 songs sometimes get over looked by the casual fan. Here's a list of U2 songs that I think are worthy of a second listen.

Please
, from the album Popmart.

Popmart is probably Bono’s best effort lyrically across an album. With wordplays on Michael Jackson being history over Jackson’s own
HIStory pun, the blind leading the blonde and the line from Please, “Your Catholic blues, Your convent shoes” pretty much summing up Bono’s eternal search for his place and pace in the world - this song was depressing yet uplifting at the same time. Overall, it was a question being asked of Ireland's political leaders.

Dirty Day, Zooropa

“These days, days, days run away like horses over the hill” being sung over and over at the end always remind me that I never have enough time to do what ever it is I wanted do. This song did make me go see a documentary on the guy it was dedicated to, the author
Charles Bukowski and read some of his books.

Van Dieman’s Land, from Rattle and Hum.

This song has The Edge singing about the life of the
John Boyle O'Reilly, who was deported to Australia for writing bad poetry. The song's sentiments reflect the hard life that immigrants faced when they arrived in Van Dieman's Land.

Unchained Melody

Clearly not an original U2 song but when you hear Bono sing it, it has the emotion that all their big hits have. Released as a B-side to With Or Without You, it has been a favourite amongst the U2 hardcore for years.

MLK, The Unforgettable Fire album.

While the fire is a reference to atomic bombs being dropped in Japan (an early portent of How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb maybe?) the album seemed dedicated to two Kings – Elvis and Martin Luther King.
MLK is sung like a lullaby. While Bono’s politic rants and beseeches and besmirches of The Man might put the more jaded and cynical amongst us to sleep, you can’t complain that this song does the same in a nice under the covers on a rainy day kind of way.

Beat on the Brat, cover of The Ramones, from the We’re a Happy Family Ramones Tribute Album.

Beat on the brat with a baseball bat. Yeah punk. U2 started out playing Ramone’s covers trying to pass them off as their own. Which is pretty much the music industry down pat these days. What can you do?

Original of the Species.

Coming from their popular How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb album, Original of the Species is almost like a classic father to daughter message, 'Don't Grow Up Too Fast, Baby'.

What are your favourite U2 songs you think are worthy of a second listen?

Godsmack serenity lyrics, I need serenity lyrics, godsmack

As I sit here and slowly close my eyes
I take another deep breath
And feel the wind pass through my body
I'm the one in your soul
Reflecting inner light
Protect the ones who hold you
Cradling your inner child

I need serenity
In a place where I can hide
I need serenity
Nothing changes, days go by

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Tragic visions slowly stole my life
Tore away everything
Cheating me out of my time
I'm the one who loves you
No matter wrong or right
And every day I hold you
I hold you with my inner child

I need serenity
In a place where I can hide
I need serenity
Nothing changes, days go by

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

Where do we go when we just don't know
And how do we relight the flame when it's cold
Why do we dream when our thoughts mean nothing
And when will we learn to control

One day in Your life - Michael jackson

One day in your life
you’ll remember a place
Someone’s touching your face
You’ll come back and you’ll look around you

One day in your life
You’ll remember the love you found here
You’ll remember me somehow
Though you don’t need me now
I will stay in your heart
And when things fall apart
You’ll remember one day…

One day in your life
When you find that you’re always waiting
For the love we used to share
Just call my name
And I’ll be there

(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh…)

You’ll remember me somehow
Though you don’t need me now
I will stay in your heart
And when things fall apart
You’ll remember one day…

One day in your life
When you find that you’re always longing
for the love we used to share
Just call my name
And I’ll be there

(Ohh…)

THE ITALIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM AND IT HISTORY

Italian National Flag
The "Fratelli d'Italia" (Italian's Brothers), called also "Inno di Mameli" is the Italian National Anthem officially, only from 1946, after the IInd WW and the fall of the fascism..
Mameli wrote that Imn on 1847, during the first battles for the Italian Unification
(Risorgimento Italiano), where was very successful, and when many Italians fought for the unification of our country, but that song - for my opinion, and for the opinion of many others italian's citizens - that song was good 150 years ago, not now.
Many people proposed, in 1946, to adopt as the national anthem 'Coro del Nabucco', by Giuseppe Verdi, but the story of Nabucco isn't italian, it's from Israel; also if in '70's some peoples made a petition to adop it..

Wrote by Mameli
Lyrics:
Fratelli d'Italia,

l'Italia s'è desta,
dell'elmo di Scipio
s'è cinta la testa.
Dov'è la vittoria?
Le porga la chioma,
che schiava di Roma
Iddio la creò.

Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò.
Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò!

Noi fummo da secoli
calpesti, derisi,
perché non siam popolo,
perché siam divisi.
Raccolgaci un'unica
bandiera, una speme:
di fonderci insieme
già l'ora suonò.

Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò.
Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò!

Uniamoci, amiamoci,
l'unione e l'amore
rivelano ai popoli
le vie del Signore.
Giuriamo far libero
il suolo natio:
uniti, per Dio,
chi vincer ci può?

Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò.
Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò!

Dall'Alpi a Sicilia
Dovunque è Legnano,
Ogn'uom di Ferruccio
Ha il core, ha la mano,
I bimbi d'Italia
Si chiaman Balilla,
Il suon d'ogni squilla
I Vespri suonò.

Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò.
Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò!

Son giunchi che piegano
Le spade vendute:
Già l'Aquila d'Austria
Le penne ha perdute.
Il sangue d'Italia,
Il sangue Polacco,
Bevé, col cosacco,
Ma il cor le bruciò.

Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò.
Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò!
Sì (cantato)

Now 'Giovinezza', was the imn of Italian Fascist party, but it was considerated also a sort of "The 2nd Italian National Anthem" ( 80-90% of italians were subscribed to Fascist Party).
Mussolini become to the power on 1922 to 1946, and 'Giovinezza' become The official National Anthem of Italian Social Repubblic (R.S.I.) , after September 8, 1944 , when the King of Italy went away from Italy and his goverment surrended to Allies, in North Italy, where fascist and nazists has theirs command, and the Civil War started; Italy was divided in two parts: north fascists and South allies, but the civil war, of course ws only on RSI, in North Italy...
A part the bad history and bad civil war, the music and lyrics of 'Giovinezza''s song - for me - is better tha other two anthem, of course we could delete the phrases about Mussolini, but if you leaves thjese words, you can understand, also in english language that as an Italian National Anthem is better than others...
Below, the lyrics in english language of 'Giovinezza', that I consider the most 'Italian' of all Our Anthems
PS: I never been a fascist, on the contrary, I believe in democracy and on freedoom; I repeat: if the words about Mussolini could be deletes that Anthem is one of more near to the Italian Spirit...

Hail, people of heroes,

Hail, immortal Fatherland,
Your sons were born again
With faith in the Ideal.
Your warriors' valour,
Your pioneers' virtue,
Alighieri's vision,
Today shines in every heart

Youth, Youth,
Spring of beauty,
In the hardship of life
Your song rings and goes!
And for Benito Mussolini,
Hip hip hooray
And for our beautiful Fatherland,
Hip hip hooray

In the Italian borders,
Italians have been remade
Mussolini has remade them
For tomorrow's war,
For labour's glory,
For peace and for the laurel,
For the shame of those
Who repudiated our Fatherland

The poets and the artisans,
The lords and the countrymen,
With an Italian's pride
Swear fealty to Mussolini
There's no poor suburb
That doesn't send its ranks,
That doesn't unfurl the flags
Of the redeeming Fascism

Every Breaking Wave Lyrics by U2

Every Breaking Wave Lyrics by U2

Every Breaking Wave is the well discussed but as yet unpublished song left over from the U2's recording sessions of the album, No Line on the Horizon.

While talk is very cheap, U2 have talked about and talked up Every Break Wave since NLOTH was released, perhaps more than other songs from the same album! U2 Fans are guessing that the song will eventually be released when U2 get on their boots and finish the keenly anticipated album, Songs of Ascent.

Bono and Larry et al have talked about how they will record the the follow up album in the near future. I'm not holding my breath. U2 are booked to tour till NLOTH till at least the end of 2010. Maybe they will do a Zooropa on us and record in between concert dates. Again, please no breath holding as Bono and the Edge are also trying to lock down the now delayed Spider Man musical, Turn Off the Dark.

So what actually happened?
U2 debuted Every Breaking Wave during a gig in Helsinki. Here's the lyrics from that night.

Every breaking wave
On the shore
Til the next one there’ll be one more

Every gambler knows
That to lose
Is what you’re really there for

Somewhere else, fearlessness
Now I’m speaking to an answer phone
Every falling leaf
On the breeze
Winter wouldn’t leave her alone

Ay hey now
Ay hey now

I don’t know if I’m that strong
I don’t know if I’m that strong
Don’t know if I’m that strong
To be somebody
To need someone

Every sailor knows that the sea
Is a friend made enemy
Every shipwrecked soul
Knows what it is
To live without intimacy
I thought I heard the master’s voice
It’s hard to listen while you preach

Like every broken wave
On the shore
This is as far as I can reach

Ay hey now
Ay hey now

I don’t know if I’m that strong
I don’t know if I’m that strong
Don’t know if I’m that strong
Got to be somebody
To need someone

The waves know
We’re on the rocks
Drowning is no sin

You know
That my heart
Is the same place yours has been

We know
Here with
The end before it begins

The waves know
We’re on the rocks
Drowning is no sin

You know
That my heart
Is the same place yours has been

We know
Here with
The end before it begins
